RARITY IS NOT FINISH

Variation guide

A precise field guide to the finishes and rarity classes used by this vault—without unsupported scarcity or pull-rate claims.

01

Non-holo

No foil layer is applied to the card face. In Pitch Black, this is the standard finish for confirmed Common and Uncommon base-set cards.

02

Holofoil

A reflective foil treatment appears in the illustration or card face. Pitch Black Rare and Double Rare cards use confirmed holofoil treatments.

03

Reverse holofoil

The foil treatment appears outside the main illustration window. Pitch Black has a confirmed 74-card reverse-holo parallel covering eligible cards 001–084.

04

Textured or etched foil

A tactile or patterned surface treatment. Pitch Black Special Illustration Rares use textured foil, while Mega Darkrai ex 120/084 uses a gold etched treatment.

05

Illustration Rare

A rarity classification for full-art Pokémon illustrations. It describes card rarity and composition—not a universal finish available to other cards.

06

Special Illustration Rare

A higher rarity classification used for select full-art Pokémon ex and Supporter cards, with a confirmed textured holofoil treatment in this set.

07

Ultra Rare

A rarity classification covering the 18 full-art cards numbered 096–113. “Ultra Rare” is not interchangeable with reverse holo or promotional stamping.

08

Hyper Rare

Pitch Black contains one Mega Hyper Rare: Mega Darkrai ex 120/084, with a gold etched foil treatment.

09

Stamped promotional card

A separately distributed printing carrying a prerelease, Staff, Pokémon Center, or 30th-anniversary stamp. The stamp and product source make it a distinct physical variation.

COLLECTOR’S RULE

Track what exists, not what usually exists.

The vault assigns a finish only when that exact printing is confirmed. Product-exclusive and stamped cards are tracked separately from base-set rarity, and unavailable promo imagery is represented by a transparent placeholder.
